Born in Saint Petersburg, Russia on September 4 1900 to Baltic-German and American parents, George spent his working life in France, England and the United States. By 1925 George had already worked his way up to chief of photography of French Vogue. In 1931 he met Horst P Horst, who became his lover and frequent model. While there they visited photographer Cecil Beaton, who was working for the British edition of Vogue. In 1931 Horst began his association with Vogue publishing his first photograph in the French edition of Vogue in November of that year.
In 1935 George moved to New York City where he did most of his work for Harper's Bazaar. He published two art books on Greece and Egypt before relocating to Hollywood, where he earned his reputation by shooting glamorous portraits for the film industry.
He worked before anything resembling contemporary flash photography was known. Working in huge studios and with whatever lighting worked best. There is something about the texture of his black and whites that one seldom finds in contemporary work. Beyond fashion, he was a master portraitist as well from Hollywood stars to other celebrities.
He also worked in Hollywood in various capacities in the film industry, working closely with George Cukor, notably as special visual and color consultant for the 1954 Judy Garland movie A Star Is Born. He served a similar role for the 1957 film Les Girls, which starred Kay Kendall and Mitzi Gaynor, the Sophia Loren film Heller in Pink Tights and The Chapman Report.
He died at 68 years of age in Los Angeles.

From about 1972 to the time she died, not sure when but near 1976, she and Uncle Gunther would visit my home in Staten sland. By then she had become frail and I believe she had cancer.
During those times since I was very interested in fashion, she showed me her albums of her most loved photos, some of which are amazing. After she died, and for a short time, I had the privilege of living with her furniture and some of her belongings before they were sent to London for auction.
I brought one of her pieces of furniture from her Manhattan apartment, her corner dressing table (three mirrors) with me to Australia, where I now live. It will grace the home of a dear friend of mine shortly so I took a chance and Googled her name. How wonderful to see her in all her glory of the 1920s and 1930s in Paris.
With fond memories of an elegant lady,
Marie-Louise Hekel
